Hollywood Records’ newest pop-rock band has taken the world by storm. They have garnered a massive global fan-base, toured North America thrice and worked on nearly 100 different theatrical, commercial and dancing projects. This is the phenomenal band known as… R5!
I had the incredible opportunity to interview the talented five-piece pop-rock group. The band consists of four siblings – Ross Lynch (rhythm guitar, lead vocals), Riker Lynch (bass guitar, lead vocals), Rocky Lynch (lead guitar, lead vocals), Rydel Lynch (keyboards, tambourine, vocals) – and a family friend Ellington Ratliff (better known as Ratliff – drums, vocals).
Apart from the family band, Ross also stars in one of Disney’s most popular sitcoms ‘Austin & Ally’ as Austin Moon. Riker also has a recurring role in one of the most popular Fox shows of all time, ‘Glee’, as Jeff.
I recently featured R5 as a rising star in 2012 and judging from the positive reception that their latest single “Crazy 4 U” has received, I truly believe that the band will take over charts worldwide! Before being signed to Hollywood Records, the band released a five-track EP titled Ready Set Rock. After a long wait, the band has announced that their new EP Loud will be released in February 2013 and an album will be released as a follow-up to the EP in Fall 2013.
We can't wait to see R5 in Singapore & Asia soon! There is quite a demand for the band in Singapore and Riker has said that the band looks forward to touring outside North America soon! So...... Let's make some noise, request their songs on the radio when they're released and let concert promoters know that Singapore's waiting for their R5-itis! (well, since there's the Bieber Fever and the One Direction Infection, I figured that the band needed its own disease. No? Okay...)
We heard that the band has been working on its debut album. What can fans expect from the album?
Riker: Well first, we’re going to release to an EP with 4 songs in February. And then in the fall of 2013, we’re going to release a full length album and you will be able to use the EP to “complete my album” sort of thing. It’s gonna be cool!
What is a typical day for the band like?
Riker: Every day is pretty random because things pop up like last minute meetings or whatever so let’s just give you what went down last Tuesday (Jan 1, 2013):
Rydel gets up before all of us except Ross. Ross gets up pretty early to go to the ‘Austin & Ally’ set. After breakfast, Rydel goes to yoga and Rocky, my dad, and I go play ice hockey. Meanwhile Ratliff is working on the drums with his drum coach. Then at about 1:30pm, we all meet up for lunch and we head to our rehearsal room. We’ll rehearse for a bit and then Ross will get there around 4pm and we rehearse for whatever show we have coming up next. After that, we head home to do almost the same thing the next day. Sometimes there’s a recording session added or an interview. It’s all random.
What goes through your minds when you’re performing onstage?
Riker: I’m just feeling the crowd, really. I have so much fun on stage I can’t believe this is my job!
Rydel: When I'm on stage I'm just thinking about how much freaking fun I'm having! And of course, singing and playing the correct notes! [Laughs]
Ratliff: My thoughts are, "Don't mess up, don't mess up, don't mess up!" [Laughs]
What are your favorite and least favorite things about touring?
Ratliff: Playing shows, meeting fans, and hanging on the bus. Least favorite, waking up at crazy hours way before the sun is up.
Rydel: My favorite thing about touring is being on the bus! It’s so much fun! And I don't have a least favorite part!
Rocky: I love seeing all the fans! And my least favorite is not having access to a shower on the bus ha!
Ross: Performing with these guys definitely! I don't like having to perform by myself, being on stage with them is so much more fun. And least favorite, I don't even know.
Riker: Definitely doing what I love night after night, for so many awesome fans, with my best friends in the world. My least favorite would be not sleeping in my bed but my bunk on the bus is pretty dang comfy.
Ross and Riker must be quite busy due to their roles on ‘Austin & Ally’ and ‘Glee’ respectively. Have their busy schedules ever affected R5?
Riker: It gets pretty crazy at times, more for Ross than for me. Ross has crazy hours going from the ‘Austin & Ally’ set to a red eye flight to New York or wherever, to literally landing and playing a show with us on like 3 hours of sleep. It’s insane! I get pretty lucky with the ‘Glee’ schedule because I only shoot for a day or 2 every once in a while.
If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Rocky: Macaroni and Cheese!
Rydel: I would probably have to go with a Hamburger!
Ratliff: Pizza, because there are so many different types to choose from. Endless possibilities!
Ross: French toast!
Riker: A cheese burger for sure! I LOVE cheese burgers with fries and a chocolate shake!
What are your New Year’s Resolutions?
Ross: I want to write more with Riker and Rocky. With shooting ‘Austin & Ally’ all the time I don’t get to write with them as much.
Rocky: This new year I really want to get a car.
Riker: To write new songs for R5, keep touring, and keep growing as a band.
Rydel: One of my New Year's Resolutions is to be more patient with the boys [Laughs] because they are... well boys!
Ratliff: To get taller.
Are there any artists whom you would like to collaborate with?
Riker: I think all of us would love to play a show or something with Neon Trees. We’ve seen them twice live and they’re just awesome!
Do you have any plans to perform outside of North America at the moment?
Riker: We definitely will someday, hopefully sometime in 2013!
If you could be another member of R5, who would you be?
Rydel: I'd like to be Ratliff maybe, so I could play the drums!!
Ratliff: I would be Rydel too, because face it, every dude wants to be a girl for a day... Right? Just to see what it's like! [Laughs]
Riker: I think I would want to be Rocky or Ross so I could play their cool guitar parts.
Ross: Definitely Riker. He’s the coolest.
