The incredibly catchy minimalist pop song "Royals" has taken the world by storm since its release in March 2013. The multi-platinum song was finely constructed by 16 year old singer-songwriter Lorde. The song peaked at #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and won the New Zealand native the prestigious Silver Scroll songwriting award.
Now, I absolutely love this song to bits — I think it's a tour de force especially given Lorde's young age. The instrumentals and vocals and emotions and lyrics... it all jells together to create a song that really speaks volumes about, well, royals.
I could go on all day praising this beautiful masterpiece but you know what? Let's shift the focus to something else: covers. It's not easy to pull off this song, there's no doubt about that. Sure, there may not be a vast vocal range required for the song, but without the appropriate emotions and technique, the song will be in shambles.
After spending an entire day watching covers of "Royals" on YouTube, I found some amazing covers that are sure to blow your minds. Of course, I did watch some horrifying ones which will likely scar me for life but let's not delve into the negativities, shall we?
This is just beautiful. 'nuff said. All you have to do is watch this video and you'll fall in love with Davina Leone's voice and musicianship. Plus, the production is really well done as well.
Walk Off The Earth
If you've ever wondered how "Royals" would sound as a happy song (let's face it — it's a dark, gloomy song), you have to watch this video! With ukuleles and eating utensils as instruments, Canadian rock band Walk Off The Earth presents you a unique rendition of "Royals".
Dutch singer Krystl performed "Royals" on a radio show with her own spin on it — breathing/panting sounds. The breathing sounds set a chilling ambiance and it was absolutely perfect.
17 year old recording artist Alex Moore's cover of "Royals" almost parallels Lorde's original version. This is remarkable — I've watched this video multiple times and I still can't get enough of Alex's rendition of "Royals"!
