16 year old Kira Kosarin is quickly on her way to becoming the new face of Nickelodeon.
Kira stars as Phoebe Thunderman on hit Nickelodeon sitcom The Thundermans. Phoebe, along with her family, possesses super powers that she must hide from normal people, also known as non-supes. A responsible straight-A student, she is the complete opposite of her fraternal twin brother Max (played by Jack Griffo), an aspiring villain who often gets under her skin. Along with the twins' two mischievous younger siblings Billy (played by Diego Velazquez) and Nora (played by Addison Riecke) and ex-superhero parents Hank (played by Chris Tallman) and Barb (played by Rosa Blasi), the Thundermans are far from your typical American family.
Music also plays an integral part in Kira's life. "I always performed when I was little, doing musical theatre to follow in my parents’ Broadway footsteps," Kira tells Musichel in an exclusive interview. Last year, she put out her debut single "Replay", where she showcased her singing and rapping skills and had fans putting the song on replay. Kira also occasionally performs covers of popular hits and posts them on her YouTube channel, which have garnered thousands of positive reviews.
Musichel had the opportunity of chatting with Kira about The Thundermans, where she shared with us about her reaction when she found out she landed the role of Phoebe, superpowers, starring on a hit TV show at age sixteen and more.
Hi Kira. How did you get started in acting?
I always performed when I was little, doing musical theatre to follow in my parents’ Broadway footsteps. When I was eleven, I took an “acting on camera” workshop, fell in love with it, moved to California and tried to start a career in television. Here we are four years later!
Congratulations on the success of The Thundermans. What went through your mind when you found out that you got the part of Phoebe?
Thanks! I'm not even going to lie: I cried… a lot. I spent three years getting really close to jobs and getting turned down, so finally booking something was amazing. Plus, it's my dream job. My first day in Hollywood, someone asked what I wanted to do if I could book any job and I said I wanted a Nickelodeon show. When I finally got one, I couldn't believe it.
The cast of The Thundermans

Describe Max and Phoebe’s relationship in one word.
Oxymoronic. Max and Phoebe are rivals who always fight, but they really do care about each other.
Which member of the cast of The Thundermans are you closest to?
Probably Jack [Griffo] or Audrey Whitby, who plays my best friend. Jack and I actually knew each other for three years before booking the show. Audrey and I knew each other for two.
If you could have one of Phoebe’s superpowers in real life, which would it be?
Telekinesis. It'd be great for getting the remote when I don't want to get up and bringing food from the kitchen to my room — silly stuff like that.
Do you have any behind-the-scenes secrets to share?
The air conditioning is always freezing, so between takes and during rehearsals, we all bundle up in onesies and bathrobes, especially on Onesie Wednesday.
If you could play another character on The Thundermans, who would it be?
I'd love to play Max for a bit. It'd be fun to play evil.
You recently put out a single called “Replay” and you also post covers on YouTube. Is doing music as a career something you would explore in the future?
Music is definitely another passion of mine and I'd love to work it into my career at some point in the future.
In your opinion, what are some upsides and downsides of being an actress at such a young age?
It's amazing to get to have my dream job at only sixteen, but it definitely is a lot of stress and pressure for a kid who's expected to act like an adult. Plus, it's a pretty crazy schedule. I sacrifice a lot of social life and never really get to hang out with friends, but it's totally worth it to me.
Apart from The Thundermans, do you have any upcoming projects that fans can look forward to this year?
Right now, I'm really focusing on The Thundermans. I'm graduating high school in a couple of weeks, so I'm excited to have some time to just work on the show before eventually going off to college.
The Thundermans just started airing in Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia last month. What are some reasons why people should watch the show?
It really has something for everyone. Plus, I think it's just a really fun, feel-good show. I hope everyone loves watching it as much as we love making it!
