MTV is known for its lavish award ceremonies and among its famed award shows is the annual MTV Europe Music Awards (better known to the public as the MTV EMAs). Held at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow on Nov 9, 2014, this year's EMA was hosted by "Anaconda" hit-maker Nicki Minaj. Read on as we recap our favourite parts of this year's EMA!
Stealing the show with her out-of-the-world wardrobe changes and her elaborate performances, Nicki blew our minds with a mash up of her hits "Anaconda" and "Super Bass". She also took the opportunity to debut her newest single "Bed of Lies", on which she was joined by singer-songwriter Skylar Grey .
America's iconic ponytail-wearer Ariana Grande let down her hair in Glasgow that night as she snagged not one but two awards: one for Best Song and another for Best Female. It was a rare sight to see her let loose her pretty long locks as she took to the stage to perform her two biggest hits so so far—"Problem" and "Break Free"—while floating above the audience in a bubble-like chair.
The EMA was certainly a celebration of music. As the night progressed, more artists took to the stage to show off their latest songs and entertain the crowd. It was a star-studded show as superstars of the likes of Charli XCX, Kiesza and Enrique Iglesias graced the stage to accept awards and perform.
While we were all hoping that our favourite redhead Ed Sheeran would display some of his dreamy dance moves in his performance of "Thinking Out Loud", we were not disappointed when he didn't because instead, he swept everyone off their feet when by serenading us with his guitar. We will definitely be thinking of his EMA performance all night.
Unsurprisingly, British-Irish boy band One Direction took home the most awards at the EMA. It was a shame that they were not present to accept their awards but they were generous enough to leave their endearing fans sweet video messages thanking them for their continued support. After a long night of screaming, cheering and dancing, the crowd was seemingly drained and so were we—even though we were watching the show from our television screens. Even though we could not be physically there (someday, we will. Someday), it was a memorable EMA for us.
Before Nicki Minaj left us to attend the EMA after-party (which she says will be a rendezvous with a delightful cup of tea in her hotel room), she revealed that 2015's EMA will be taking place in the fashion capital of the world: Milan, Italy. Show us what you've got, Italy! We'll see you next year. (Again, from our television screens.)
