Interview: Gavin MacIntosh from 'The Fosters'

There are two kinds of actors in the world: actors who act, and actors who above all that make a difference through acting. Gavin MacIntosh is the perfect example of the latter.

Gavin plays Connor Stevens in ABC Family's The Fosters, a popular athletic student who at this point in the show may or may not be questioning his sexuality. "There are so many kids out there who are gay and feel like they can’t be open about their feelings because of social discrimination," the Tucson native said. "He’s helping kids feel that it’s okay to be different."

In this exclusive interview with Musichel, Gavin discussed his role in the show, Connor's relationship with Jude, and divulged a funny behind-the-scenes story from the set of The Fosters. We are certain that this charming young actor will be the next big thing!

You play Connor in The Fosters. For the benefit of those who’ve never seen the show, tell us a bit about the show and your character.
The show is about two lesbian mothers who are raising foster kids and there’s a lot of drama going on with them. For Connor and Jude... In the last episode, Connor was upset with Jude and we don’t really know the reason Connor was upset so it’s something we have yet to see played out in upcoming episodes.

Last time we saw Connor on The Fosters, he said some pretty mean things to Jude. Does this change the whole dynamic of their relationship in the series?
I think that Connor being upset with Jude was more of just a stage in their relationship and I think they’ll get over it because underneath this they are very good friends.

What’s it like working with the cast of The Fosters?
It’s amazing working with the cast. It’s incredible to see the show come together when we see it on Monday nights. And when we’re filming, everything just comes together into one big show and the impact it has on other people is incredible.

You and Hayden [Byerly] are really good friends off-set. Was it hard or awkward being mad at his character on screen?
No, not at all. We’re really good friends on set and in real life so it wasn’t awkward at all.

In the preview for this coming Monday’s episode, we see Connor and Jude on a double date locking pinkies. Can you tell us about that as much as you can?
We’re definitely bringing a new twist in storylines in general so we’re in store for some exciting plots...

What’s your favourite thing about playing Connor?
My favourite thing is the impact his character has on other people and he’s breaking stereotypes. There are so many kids out there who are gay and feel like they can’t be open about their feelings because of social discrimination. He’s helping kids feel that it’s okay to be different.

Personally, do you see Connor and Jude as more of a friendship pairing or more of a romantic pairing?
I think it depends on how people view it. I see them more as friends that could have a chance for a relationship but it’s all up to the writers how that goes.

Do you have any behind-the-scenes stories to share?
[Laughs] There’s a lot of stuff that happens on set that’s pretty crazy. One time, I was in a school shoot that we were shooting and we spilled Dr Pepper all over the trailer and we went on set. It smelled. When we came back, the whole trailer was raided with ants! It was pretty crazy.

Do you get recognised when you’re out and about?
Occasionally I do. I usually get recognised a lot when I’m with Hayden [Byerly], who plays Jude.

Let’s talk a bit about yourself. You’re from Tucson, AZ and you now live in southern California.
I am from Tucson and I do live in Hermosa Beach right now. Hayden actually lives a few blocks away from me so we hang out all the time on the beach. One of our main hobbies is skateboarding, and we skateboard pretty much every day.

What’s your favourite thing about skateboarding?
Favourite things... Nothing really in particular. It’s more of just going out whenever I have a break from school [or] a break from filming. I just go out and skate for hours.

If you could be in any TV show, which would it be?
If Breaking Bad were still filming, it would be Breaking Bad.

What are some of your New Year’s Resolutions for 2015?
I’m not the kind of person that always thinks about New Year’s Resolutions but I’m definitely looking forward to filming season three [of The Fosters].

So Connor’s booked on for season three?
I believe so! It’s in production.

That’s cool. Is he going to be a recurring character or a regular character in season three?
I’m not sure as of now.

Thank you for speaking with us today, Gavin!
Of course. Thank you so much.
